17 Things I Have Learned About Myself

I saw this prompt from Sophie (the giraffe files) and thought it was very interesting.  So I’m going to give it a go for myself to get back into blogging.

The prompt: Write a letter (post) defining one thing you learned, for every year you have been alive.

1.) Sometimes a bad thing (my partial hearing loss) isn’t always a bad thing if you look at it from a different perspective (being able to “mute” the world around me by turning off my hearing aids).

2.) I enjoy speaking in ASL with family and friends to freak out strangers.

3.) After living in Australia for a year, I want to travel and see more of the world.

4.) I might want to take a gap year before starting college.

5.) I’m not great at keeping up with my blog.

6.)  Working in a library (or bookstore) is living the dream.

7.) Coffee isn’t my preferred drink.

8.) I’m completely useless in the kitchen… other than eating all the extra frosting.

9.) I love nothing more than staying home (or in my dorm) all day in pajamas while reading and drinking hot chocolate.

10.) I like making goals for myself.

11.) I love looking up quotes and memorizing them.

12.) I’m a very independent person, despite having 8 siblings (and being a triplet).

13.) Exercising isn’t the worst thing in the world.

14.) Having certain views does not make me narrow-minded or ignorant, it shows that I stand for what I believe in no matter what.

15.) My favorite phrase is, “Why watch the movie when you can read the book?”

16.) Volunteering at the library is one of the best things I’ve done with my free time.

17.) Finding the positive in a situation makes even the worst ones bearable.

Whoo!  I did it, seventeen things I’ve learned about myself for every year I’ve been alive.  I actually enjoyed that and I hope you did too.

If you happen to give it a shot, link back to my post so I can check it out!

Going Back to the Roots

In response to Tourist Trap on The Daily Post.

It’s pretty simple to just look up our ancestry nowadays.  Just a few clicks of a button on some website, or have someone do it for you, and there you have it… your family tree.

I don’t know too much about my family history, but I do know that somewhere down that line on my dad’s side that my family comes from Scotland and somewhere from my mom’s side we hail from England.  Either way you put it, we’re from the United Kingdom.  European blood.

It’s one thing to know where you come from, but it’s different to really know the place you’re from… as in know the land.  One thing that is on my bucket list is to visit both Scotland and England in the regions where my family comes from.  I’ll have to do some research to find out exactly where though.  I just have this passion to visit the land where my great-great-great (maybe throw another great in there) grandparents actually lived their lives.  Though I won’t be able to see exactly what they saw, since I know hundreds of years makes a difference in the land, just being in the areas they lived would make me feel a little closer to them.

Whether I visit those places this summer or 20 years from now, I want to do it.  I just want to have that sense of being in the land of where my family comes from.  Heck, if I trace back far enough, I’m sure I’ll have other countries to visit at some point in my future.

As much as I love reading, I’d much rather experience these places I hear about.

Scotland and England are just the beginning.
